The Search for A Non-Federal Job

The Search for A Non-Federal JobThe Search for A Non-Federal JobThe Search for A Non-Federal JobJob search is job search, or is it? If you are reconsidering your focus on a Federal position and are now looking towards the private sector for employment, here are some tips to help you along.1. Before you start, searchUse career aggregators like Indeed.com, CareerJet.com, and SimplyHired.com to search for what you consider your ideal job. When you find it, read the announcement carefully and note the qualifications and requirements the employer wants. Your resume and your cover letter must show you match unterstellung.2. Language matters. You dont have to be fluent in more than one language, but you must be fluent in the employers language. Use the exact words the employer is using to describe your skills, qualifications, and experience so he/she will make the connection easily.3. Revise your resume. In fact, be prepared to edit your resume each time you submit it to match language, move skills up and down the list, and emphasize or de-emphasize experiences and qualifications to match the employers needs. SusanIreland.com has terrific examples and samples for you to review.4. Take the time now to create your online presence.Build a LinkedIn profile that outlines your ideal position. Use your resume to fill the spaces, but then add other content you might not have on your resume, such as volunteer work. Add a good professional photo because it really does make a difference.5. Network, online and off.Find and join some relevant groups on LinkedIn. Find and join alumni associations (college or university, veterans groups, etc.). Re-connect with old friends and former colleagues, but also connect with some new people. Find and job professional associations that represent the work you want to do. And then press some flesh, virtually and in-person. Check job-hunt.org/associations.shtml for a list of groups and associations to get you started.6. Dont overlook short-term as signments.Staffing and Temp firms are experiencing a much higher demand for talent than the general employment rate. Employers are turning to short-term help before hiring permanent staff, but they are also using these assignments to find new employees. The American Staffing Association (americanstaffing.org) has great information for job seekers and a list of member firms waiting to hear from you.7. Remember that the Feds are not the only government in the US that hires a large number of employees.Your state, county, and municipal governments also provide numerous services that demand a workforce with broad experience and qualifications. Ten Steps to Effective Informational Interviewing

Ten Steps to Effective Informational InterviewingTen Steps to Effective Informational InterviewingBy Mike Gotham, Perkins Coie, Director of Recruiting Retention, andShelley Levine, Perkins Coie, Attorney Recruiting ManagerIf hearing the word networking makes you uneasy, then the idea of an informational interview may cause you serious discomfort. Many people shy away from informational interviews, which is unfortunate studies show that informational interviews often play a critical role in a job search. In fact, statistics show that the majority of jobs are secured through networking and personal contacts.Unlike a job interview, an informational interview is notlage intended to lead directly to a job offer- it is a meeting intended to help you get advice on your job search and to expand your network. Informational interviews can also help you think about and refine your career goals and your job search. While it may seem awkward to contact a stranger to seek advice, informational in terviews are quite common. Most people can remember how difficult it was to land their first job and they are happy to spend a little time helping someone just starting in their career.Below is a step-by-step roadmap to make informational interviews easy and effective1. Compile the names of people to contact, and be expansive in creating your list. Ideally the list will be comprised of people with whom you have some connection they may be attorneys who graduated from your college or law school, a friends relative, a referral from a favorite professor, or someone you heard speak at a conference. Keep a record of the people youve contacted (and when) so you will always have a list of your contacts.2. Send an email to your contact explaining that youre looking for advice on your job search. Be sure to notenzeichen your connection right up front (I am currently seeking a summer job in Portland and my friend Jennifer Smith suggested I contact you to find out more about the legal communit y in the city.) Attach a resume so your contact will have information about your academic hintergrund and work experience. If you do not receive a reply in a week, call or send a follow-up email message. My rule is only follow up once if two requests do not trigger a reply I move on to another contact. If your contact is not able to meet, you might politely ask if she can recommend someone else for you to contact.3. It is quite common for informational interviews to be done by phone. If you will talk with your contact by phone, its important to be somewhere for the call where you will not be interrupted and where there will not be any noise in the background. If you will meet in person, meet at a time and place that is most convenient for your contact.4. This is obvious, but bears emphasis be prepared for your meeting. Research your contacts educational background and career so you not only understand the work she has done but also have a good idea of the sort of advice she might pr ovide. For example, is this person practicing in the precise field you are interested in or is this a more general meeting about the state of the local legal market?5. Prepare an agenda for yourself for the meeting with specific questions you want to ask. Its critical to think about the sort of information your contact can provide and tailor your questions accordingly. This will avoid asking questions your contact cannot answer, which can be awkward for you and for her. Remember that this is not an interview where you will be responding to questions it is up to you to ask questions and guide the conversation.6. Begin the meeting with small talk to establish a connection and pave the way for your conversation. Most people enjoy talking about themselves so ask your contact questions about herself and her career to get the conversation started.7. Although you will likely send your resume in advance of your meeting, if you will meet in person and do not send your resume in advance, brin g copies of your resume in case your contact wants to review your background. And be prepared to discuss your academic career and work experience. Keep in mind that your contact may want to assess your qualifications before recommending you to a friend.8. Avoid asking about job opportunities. This meeting is not about getting a job offer your focus should be on collecting information that will be helpful in your job search generally, e.g., information about the type of work you hope to pursue and the legal community in which you want to work. Your contact knows you are looking for a job if she knows of one that would be appropriate for you she will tell you about it.9. Remember that your contact is busy so keep your meeting short. Twenty to thirty minutes is about right. Near the end of your meeting, ask your contact if there are additional people she could suggest you contact for further advice. Be sure to inquire if you may use your contacts name when you contact these other peopl e.10. Send a thank you note within 24 hours of your meeting. The message may be sent by hard copy or by email, but it should be a personalized note sincerely thanking your contact for her time and her assistance.Mike Gothamis Perkins Coies Director of Recruiting Retention andShelley Levine is Perkins Coies Attorney Recruiting Manager. This is a sponsored blog post fromPerkins Coie LLP. Job Search Tax Deduction Elimination for 2018 and Beyond

Job Search Tax Deduction Elimination for 2018 and BeyondJob Search Tax Deduction Elimination for 2018 and BeyondJob search expenses were potentially a tax deduction when you filed your income taxes through the 2017 tax year. However, since whats deductible on your income taxes- and whats not- is determined by the current tax law, be aware that this deduction has changed. What Does the New Tax Bill Mean for Job Searchers? In December 2017, the U.S. House and Senate passed the Tax Cuts and Job Acts, with provisions that took effect in 2018 and will last through 2025. This bill suspends or eliminates many deductions, including the option to deduct job-search-related expenses, according toForbes. Forbes reports that Miscellaneous deductions which exceed 2% of your AGI will be eliminated for the tax years 2018 through 2025. This includes job search expenses. 20182025 Job Search Expenses Tax Deduction Elimination For 2018 and going forward, ansicht deductions will not be available or will change. For example, the deduction for moving expenses if you are relocating because of a job transfer, for a new job, or to start a business has been suspended through 2025. 2017 Deductions If You Searched for a Job in the Same Line of Work *Note The information below is accurate for taxes paid for 2017 (that is, the taxes filed by April 15, 2018). If you were looking for a job in the same line of work youre currently in, many of your expenses like phone calls, the costs of preparing and copying yourresume, and career counseling were deductible for 2017. You didnt have to be out of work to have some of your costs qualify as a deductible expense, but only expenses that exceeded 2% percent of your income counted. If you had been unemployed during 2017, you needed to report yourunemploymentcompensation as income. Also, severance pay, bonuses, 401(k) and/or other pension distributions may be taxable. Work that was done as an independent contractor also must be included in yo ur income. For detailed information on what you need to report and how to report it, theIRSwebsite is an excellent resource. What You Cant Deduct You can deduct certain expenses you have in looking for a new job in your present occupation, even if you do not get a new job. You cannot deduct these expenses if You are looking for a job in a new occupation. There was a substantial break between the ending of your last job and when you began looking for a new one.You are looking for a job for the first time. Deductible Job Search Expenses The following are allowable job search deductible expenses, summarized fromIRS Publication 529. Employment and Outplacement Agency Fees You can deduct employment and outplacement agency fees you pay in looking for a new job in your present occupation. However, if in a later year, your employer pays you back for employment agency fees, you must include the amount you receive in your gross income up to the amount of your tax benefit in the earlier year. Also, if your employer pays the fees directly to the employment agency and you are not responsible for them, you do not include them in your gross income. Fees for verbunden services directly connected to your job search like premium networking through LinkedIn might also be covered. Resume Expenses You can deduct amounts you spend for typing, printing, and mailing copies of a resume to prospective employers if you are looking for a new job in your present occupation. Travel and Transportation Expenses If you travel to an area and, while there, you look for a new job in your present occupation, you may be able to deduct travel expenses to and from the area. You can deduct the travel expenses if the trip is primarily to look for a new job. Hotel accommodations and meals associated with travel to another area for a job in your field may also be deductible. Even if you cannot deduct the travel expenses to and from an area, you can deduct the expenses of looking for a new job in your present occupation while in the area. Phone Calls Local and long distance phone calls to prospective employers are also deductible. Documentation As with all tax deductions, there are three important words to remember document, document, document. Keep track of your expenses, and back them up with receipts. The information contained in this article is not tax or legal advice and is not a substitute for such advice. No More Excuses for Lack of Boardroom Diversity

No More Excuses for Lack of Boardroom Diversity There just arent that many women qualified to sit in the boardroom.Thats the most common excuse given by executives when asked aboutthe gender disparity in the C-suite and the boardroom. That may have been true at one point, but in 2017 that excuse no longer holds water. The truth is anexpansive pool of qualified women ready to step into top corporate roles exists, according to research from global recruitment firm Harvey Nash and the HKU Business School of the University of Hong Kong.Harvey Nash and HKU jointly run a board preparedness program called the Womens Directorship Programme (WDP), which aims to tackle the existing gender diversity imbalance in boardrooms through lectures, interactive sessions, and leadership exercises that help women meet the challenges of climbing the corporate ladder. The program offers answers to the worldwide geschftsleben communitys call to tackle the existing gender imbala nce in boardrooms, says Kirti Lad, director of executive search at Harvey Nash APAC. It has helped to produce a pool of board-ready female leaders ready to step up and create change in the business community and empowered the next generation of women leaders to gain the confidence and skills needed to secure a board position.5Steps to Help Female Executives Prepare for the C-SuiteThere are a number of steps women can take to prepare for a seat at the executivetable. Based on the feedback from business leaders in the WDP, Lad identifies five key areas for women to focus on to ensure they are prepared for top positions coaching, mentoring, sponsorship, networking, and training. Here, Lad explains the importance of eachCoaching can be used to develop a particular skill set or to support career development. It serves to develop and cultivate self-awareness to enhance leadership. Coaching is often focused on behaviors and managing change.Mentoring can be completed formally through an inte rnal program or informally through partieal networks. There is also huge value in acting as a mentor for others in order to share knowledge and develop future leaders.Sponsorship canelend be developed it is a relationship that has to be earned. This is all about the value of the relationships a person makes. In order to be sponsored, women have to be known. Sponsors are the gateways to new opportunities. Research from the Centre for Work-Life Policyfound that a sponsor can make professionals mora likely to negotiate raises and ask for stretch assignments.Networking is essential to any top executive in order to build and exert influence. In addition to internal networking, women need to be sure to look beyond and develop contacts with people from outside their industry or field.Trainingandcontinuous learning and development are key to any executive career. Investment in honing and developing new and pre-existing skills is essential. Both internal and external training are beneficial. How Companies Can Improve Executive DiversityCompanies seeking balanced and diverse C-suites must consciously implement strategies from the top down in order to achieve the goal. Lad recommends that companiestake the following actionsPromoting family-friendly work environmentsOffer flexible work, change overtime rules to discourage long working hours, and encourage men to take paternity leave.Mapping and identifying high-potential women Do so both within the business and externally to support a strong female talent pipeline.Changing the business cultureWelcome women to after-work drinks and other social activities. Make sure returning mothers feel welcome and supported in their roles. Establish and enforce positive behaviors toward women in the workplace.Engaging more male and female champions of changeSupport men and women who recognize diversity as an issue. Encourage them to act as sponsors and mentors for women within the business.Changing the hiring modelCreate talent managemen t systems that focus on performance instead of purely measuring experience in years.Changing the interview process and selection modelEnsure interview panels consist of at least one senior woman. Hold unconscious bias training to ensure teams are aware of their decision-making processes.Creating internal mentoring programsUse existing company role models to promote diversity initiatives and support talent development.Managing unconscious bias that exists during the hiring and promotion processesA top-down approach, tailored training, diverse hiring process, and fair talent management process are some of the methods that can be used to eliminate unconscious bias and promote a more inclusive corporate culture. These steps can have a real impact, Lad says. Companies like IBM, GE, Pepsi, Goldman Sachs, and others have all invested in diversity programs and seen real results in the numbers of women that are moving through their companies into senior roles.Companies that make the effort to diversify their executive leadership will reap benefits in the form of new ideas and approaches to problems.Boards made up of members from the same small network can often lead to groupthink, where those in the group come from the same background, share the same viewpoint, and are happy with the status quo, Lad says. A certain level of tension or conflict in a boardroom helps to encourage varied approaches and often leads to boards being more agile and aware of customer issues. If thats not convincing enough, Lad provides a few statistics that might change your mind.According to figures from Credit Suisse, the share prices of companies with market capital greater than $10 billion that had female directors outperformed those without by 26 percent across seven years, she says. For small to mid-size companies, the stocks of companies with female directors on their boards outperformed others by 17 percent over the same period, proving the existing gender imbalances are costing firms mon ey.

How to Cope With the Death of a Friend From Work - The Muse

How to Cope With the Death of a Friend From Work - The MuseHow to Cope With the Death of a Friend From Work One Saturday I welches walking in my front door when my phone buzzed. It welches a Facebook messenger notification from my boss. Thats strange, I thought. It welchesnt completely out of the norm to hear from her this way, since I worked remotely, but not on a weekend. The note said to let her know when I had a few minutes. A sinking feeling. Had I done something wrong? I wrote her back and took a seat. Im glad I did, since her next message was shocking My co-worker had reisepassed away in her sleep and was found during a wellness check after no one had heard from her for a few days. Since we both worked remotely, wed never met in person. And some of her suggestions in ur virtual meetings drove me nuts- switching from Gmail to Outlook? Still, hadnt we just been talking online the other day?The news caught me off guard, and in the coming weeks, her absence affected me far more th an typical changes in workflow would have. Apparently, this isnt unusual.A colleagues death can impact you in ways you didnt expect, even if you werent close with this particular co-worker, says Jen Leong, a psychotherapist based in Long Beach, California. No matter what your relationship was like, a death will affect you and others in your workplace. Moving forward can be difficult, but there are ways to cope.Accept Your ReactionGrief comes in various stages and shows up in various ways at different times and there is no wrong way, says Erica Curtis, a marriage and family therapist based in San Juan Capistrano, California. Sometimes a death will cause a big reaction, even if you werent close. Our brain works off of associations, so when we have a loss, its going to automatically trigger the other losses weve experienced in our life and bring up those feelings as well, she explains. Other times, experiencing others large reactions will make you feel like you arent upset enough. Curt is says that instead of comparing, accept that this is just how I feel right now, and try not to listen to others who might judge. Take InitiativeNikki DeClue was working at an orthopedic office when she got the news that one of her co-workers was killed in a head-on collision. The day before, theyd swapped Secret Santa gifts at the company Christmas party, and they were friends outside of work, too. It was really hard to go back to work,DeClue said. I was used to seeing my friend every single day, but all I saw was the jacket she wore on the back of her chair. While the office didnt organize any memorial events or activities, DeClue and a couple of her other colleagues went to the hospital to check on their late co-workers husband and son, who had injuries from the crash. They later attended the funeral together.Following the death of a co-worker, a workplace might not take immediate steps to acknowledge it. If you feel compelled to do something or think itd be helpful for your coll eagues, Curtis recommends approaching your direct supervisor and asking if itd be OK for you to organize something. Bring an idea thats not too disruptive to the workday, but gives staff the opportunity to get involved. An empty desk can feel heavy, Curtis says. But doing something as simple as leaving a memory journal there for people to write in can help. Depending on the connection to the late co-workers family, it might be appropriate to pass the book along to them once its full of remembrances. Morgan Irish-Georges co-worker was killed in a car accident en route to a vacation. Her boss gathered everyone together to talk about the death, Irish-George says, but several colleagues also took initiative to help everyone cope after the initial conversation. One employee arranged to have a therapy dog come walk through our offices and building to have a pet and a smile, she says. Another coordinated a grief counselor to be made available for a session for those who would like it.Seek Support Wherever You Can Find ItDepending on the culture of the workplace, you may or may not be able to seek support at work. If management isnt open to memorial activities in the office, organizing an after-work gathering is another option. Its an opportunity for colleagues to create something on their own level, Curtis says, to come together to remember their colleague. It doesnt have to be formal- even meeting at a restaurant or grabbing a drink or coffee where everyone can chat could be beneficial. And if you feel like you need support and cant get it at the office or from your colleagues, Curtis recommends spending time with friends, your loved ones, or even a pet to feel connected to others outside your grief.Be Kind to YourselfIts crucial to take care of yourself, Curtis says. Eating healthy and exercising are good options, but it can be hard when youre grieving. You cant beat yourself up over it, she says. Instead look for smaller things, smaller moments of self-care. This c an be as simple as noticing and focusing on the smell of your coffee in the morning or reaching out and texting someone youre thinking about to help you feel grounded. Typically in bereavement, going to work is a distraction, Leong says. But when the person who dies is your co-worker, that doesnt necessarily take you away from it. Moreover, she adds, part of bereavement includes being foggy-headed and distracted and thats going to impact productivity. If you notice youre distracted at your desk, instead of brushing it off as fatigue, recognize that you might be grieving. And make space for your emotions, Curtis says. Feelings get stronger and bigger because they dont feel like theyre being heard or acknowledged. She recommends doodling or imagining a container and asking your feelings to go there, not to be locked up, but to wait until they can be processed outside of the workday. Beyond these exercises, you might be able to take advantage of grief-related programs or services some w orkplaces offer through HR, and you might want to seek out therapy. If the workplace is becoming a trigger, Curtis recommends talking with your manager about setting up flex time or seeing if you can take anywhere from a couple days to weeks off. Know That it Takes TimeMore than 10 years ago, when Jen Giangregorio was working in retail, a co-worker drowned one weekend. He was young and smart and he just drowned, Giangregorio says. It was horrible. We were all devastated, she adds. I still think about it.The loss of a co-worker will always be in your thoughts, and could be triggered 20 years after the event. Theres no quick fix, says Leong. You will always know this has happened and the person will always be gone. Be patient and give yourself space to express your emotions when they come up.After my colleagues death, the rest of us continued working, but the company temporarily put a pause on any new tasks. We sent a floral arrangement to my co-workers family, and I eventually took o ver some of her responsibilities. It was weird to delete her off our Trello and Monday boards, and I caught myself trying to send her an email a couple of times. But while I still think of her nearly a year later- and Im sure Im not the only one- weve managed to reach a new normal.

How to Work With Someone You Hate- The Muse

How to Work With Someone You Hate- The MuseHow to Work With Someone You HateNearly every day, my client Sean arrived at work to a voicemail from her co-worker Jackson, who was three time zones away. Call me as soon as you get this, barked the voice on the other end. Youve got big problems here It was one of the most difficult working relationships shed ever had. Negative. Blaming. Self-centered. Mean. In short, it gave her a reason to hate coming to work every day. And maybe you have one, too a colleague you absolutely dread coming in contact with during the workday, whether he or she works in your cube, around the corner, or across the country. In your mind, he or she exists solely to make your life a living hell. As much as youd probably prefer to simply ignore the person, you need to find a way to work past your differences. Why? Research shows that the better the relationships you have at work, the more productive, successful, and satisfied youll be.So if youre stuck in the offic e with a person who you just dont like, its in your best interest to figure out how to absprache with it. Heres how.1. Get to Know the PersonAs a human, you have a tendency to like people who are like you. Its a psychological occurrence called the mere exposure affect. If your unlikable office mate is very different from you, that fact alone may keep you from building a better relationship with him or her- regardless of his or her behavior. So, force yourself out of your comfort zone and reach out to your co-worker to get to know him or her on a more personal level. The more you get to know someone, the more you may recognize similarities between you- and the more likely youll be to change your mind about him or her.2. Dont Take the Behavior PersonallySean would often make comments like, Jackson hates me- I know it or, Im sure Jacksons out to get me. She was observing his behavior and interpreting it as an intentional, direct attack on her. In reality, its more likely that Jacksons p ersonal history was driving his behavior. In The Four Agreements, Miguel Ruiz encourages readers to take bedrngnishing personally. Nothing others do is because of you, he writes. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you wont be the victim of needless suffering. Jacksons behavior- whether it stemmed from childhood issues, poor role models in the workplace, or a lack of self-confidence- was far more about him than it was about Sean. 3. Set BoundariesOne of the challenges of unlikable people is that they come with equally unlikable behavior- and its important to learn how to distance yourself from that behavior. As Robert Frost said, Good fences make good neighbors. Sean had to learn how to determine and communicate boundaries for her interactions with Jackson. For example, instead of simply taking the urgent phone calls every day and letting the dorfwiese build up, she learned to confront Jackson and say, I feel frustrated when you exaggerate how bad a situation is. Please call me prepared with specific facts and examples that I can take action on. 4. Try the Little ThingsSome of my clients have admitted that the people who once rubbed them the wrong way are now their best friends. And it wasnt because the disliked colleague had a sudden, major transformation. Instead, my clients took small, incremental actions to better the workplace relationship. And I mean small- like saying Good morning or Have a good night when you pass the person in the office, offering to grab him or her a latte on a coffee run, or giving an affirming smile or nod after the person makes a helpful comment in a meeting. You cant change the other person. But you can change the energy you spend on him or her- from negative and resentful to positive and generative. Little by little, these small gestures will help fill you with (at least a little) positivity about the person who irritates you. 5. Control What You CanOne of the biggest stressors I see in the workplace is th e desire for people to control what they cannot. They wish their anfhrer was nicer, the company had a different culture, or their colleagues were more likable. But, as you probably know, your real leverage lies in the things you can control. Sean certainly could not control Jacksons legendary voicemail tirades, but she was able to take a few deep breaths, ask for more specific facts, avoid responding with knee-jerk emotion, and get to the heart of the message underneath the outbursts. Anger and frustration are a choice you make. Instead, choose behaviors that allow you to manage conflict more effectively and with a more positive mindset.6. Take a BreakSometimes, you just have to step away from the people who arent allowing you to be your very best self. There were days, for example, when Sean simply responded that shed get back to Jackson at a later date or time. No one needs to be a hero every hour of the day. You can excuse yourself from a hallway conversation, choose a day to wor k remotely, or plan a day that involves absolutely no meetings with your colleague. Sure, it cant be every day. But when you need to take a step back, do it.Its not all unicorns and rainbows in the workplace, thats for sure. For every person you love working with, its likely therell be another you find equally repellant. But if you take specific steps to make that relationship more of a generative force and less of a negative one, youll find more success, satisfaction and support in your work. 5 Ways You Should Research a Potential Employer

5 Ways You Should Research a Potential Employer 5 Ways You Should Research a Potential Employer Research is key. That’s the definitive statement everyone at Vault makes when offering tips to college students about to embark on a dedicated internship or job search. Why do we tell people this? Most interviews begin with the question, “So, what do you know about us?” And if you don’t do the research, you can end up making a huge job interview mistake right from the start, the type of mistake that is really hard to recover from. The best way to avoid that mistake is to just do the research. Here are some tips to help you through the process: 1. Use Vault.com â€" Let’s get the sales pitch out of the way. But in all honesty, if you’re looking to research a potential employer to determine your own interest in working at a particular company, the best way is to learn from current employees. Vault sends out surveys every year to rank companies in a variety of industries and offers employees an anonymous means to review their employer on such categories as quality of life, firm culture, leadership, etc. And users can be certain the employees actually work at the companies, so the comments made are official and carry a lot of weight with job seekers looking to work for a company that offers great pay and benefits, training opportunities, and a desirable work-life balance. And if you work in the legal industry, there’s always the newly published Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms, 2017 Edition. OK â€" sales pitch is over.   2. Find Employees or Former Employees â€" If you know someone who works at a company or used to work at a company you are looking to interview at, it’s OK to reach out to them. At best, they may be able to put in a good word for you with the right people. At the very least, they should be able to give you a sense of what it’s like to work at the company. They may offer you some insight on what to say during the interview, which topics to avoid, and who to connect with for a better shot at getting your foot in the door. If you don’t know someone, find contacts using LinkedIn and see if you can network with them or have someone you know facilitate a connection. 3. The About Us Section â€" If you’re going in to an interview, you should know exactly how the company views itself. The best way to do that is to read through the company’s About Us section on its website. This is where you go to get the complete Who, What, Why, Where, When, and How. When was the company founded, where is its main headquarters, who works there, who do they serve, what exactly is the company’s function, what is its mission, and how does the company accomplish its goals. Get that company jargon down, so you can recite it perfectly in your own words and truly demonstrate your interest in working there.   4. Research Your Interviewers â€" This was discussed in a previous blog about panel interviews to help candidates better connect with interviewers. It’s just as essential, if not more so, during the one-on-one job interview. Once you learn who is interviewing you, check out their profile on the company’s website and find their information on LinkedIn. While LinkedIn does notify users when their profile has been viewed, those users should be impressed with your efforts to best prepare for an interview. You can always look at profiles in private mode, if you feel less awkward doing so. Take all the information you can find, including education, previous employers, and a list of accomplishments, and try to tie it into your own life. If you can find that connection and build on it, you may have found yourself an ally in the hiring process.   5. Research News and Press Releases â€" The best way to ascertain a company’s goals, its achievements, its future, and the public’s perception of the company is through the media. Company news may determine whether or not you want to work for a particular organization. And, when combined with your other research, it can certainly help you develop questions you can ask at the end of the interview. That’s a great way of highlighting your interest in the company and the job. In addition, if the company is receiving bad press, without actually mentioning the news item, you can use that to your advantage and answer questions in a way that highlights your ability to fix problems brought up in the article. Getting a job takes a lot of work and is not always centered on looking up job openings and filling out applications. Those who do the best with their job search go the extra mile. Make sure you stay ahead of the pack. Do your research. Be an informed job seeker. Like What You Read? Sign Up for our Newsletter. Follow me on Twitter. Follow Vault on Twitter and Instagram.

Give employees an opportunity to use payroll deductions to donate funds to their favorite causes, and offer to match them.   Team Bonding Events:  Bonding can be as simple as a weekly basketball game held in the company parking lot or a team visit to a local museum during off-peak hours. Just have fun with it.  Free Desktop Music:  Give employees access to streaming music and headphones right at their workstations. This low-cost perk can help employees focus and reduce stress.  Technology and Community Discounts:  Many companies offer technology discounts to corporations. Why not pass these discounts down in the form of a corporate discount program? Maintain a list of vendors offering coupons and discounts on everything from software to travel.   Fitness Classes:  Once a month, host a local exercise instructor to teach employees yoga, spinning, resistance training, running, and other forms of fitness. Make this a regular part of your wellness program. Arrange for discounts for participants who want to continue these classes.  Community Education:  In the summer months, open up your facility in the evenings for community education efforts. Adults can learn a variety of life and career skills, including those that they can immediately transfer to their work.   Quarterly Cookouts or Potlucks:  Give employees something to look forward with a small get-together held in the company cafeteria. This room can also double as a comfort station for pre-natal mothers who need to rest and breastfeeding mothers.   Annual Learning Stipends:  A learning organization is a thriving one. Give employees the option to participate in an industry certification program, a college class, an industry seminar, or another accredited program of their choice once a year.  Game Room:  Give employees a place to de-stress and unwind with a break area complete with gaming equipment. This can include a mix of physical games and mental games.  Personal Care Services:  Bring in a hair stylist for once-monthly haircuts for employees or try a dry cleaning service drop-off.   College Scholarships for Employee Children:  Each year, let employees request scholarships for their children heading to college. Select recipients of awards based on their grades and achievements.Vacation Reimbursement:  When employees head out for vacation, offer them a chance to be reimbursed for 50 percent of their meal and gas costs. This encourages employees to worry less about taking time off, and they return refreshed.   When putting together a perks and benefits program, make sure you have a clear idea of what behaviors youd like to influence in your employees, such as better health and well-being, and design it around these goals. Be creative, and dont forget to poll your employees to find new ways to sweeten the compensation. Doing so will help your company retain more high-performance employees and impact your bottom line results.

Breaking Into a New Sales Territory

Breaking Into a New Sales Territory Breaking Into a New Sales Territory Any time you change sales jobs or your company decides to expand, youre probably going to find yourself looking at a whole new territory, with new leads to find and solicit. A new territory means youre starting your pipeline from scratch. You dont have the option of getting back to slow decision makers or hitting up customers whove purchased from you before; everyone in your new area is a cold lead. Know Your Prospects The first step in tackling that new territory is getting to know your prospects. Most territories are arranged along geographic lines; depending on your companys size and the nature of its products, your territory might be a few square miles around the vicinity of your office or it might include whole countries. Either way, you need to understand what makes the inhabitants tick. In a way, its like getting to know a new product- once you know whats important to prospects in your area, you can use the proper benefits to win them over. Hopefully, your new territory came with a lead list or two to get you started. If not, youll need to do some quick research and identify at least a few leads who might be qualified to purchase from you or pay for a lead list out of your own pocket. The good news about breaking into a new area is that it gives you a perfect rationale for calling up those leads. You can tell them that youre new to this area, you wanted to introduce yourself and get to know “the neighbors” and if possible, you can slide in a special offer or discount as a sort of introductory gift. Dont Stop Cold Calling too Early A new territory means youll be doing a great deal of cold calling. Once the fruits of your labors start to roll in, its tempting to cut way back on cold calling and focus on all those new appointments youve set up. However, if you give in to this impulse, in a few days or weeks youll find yourself with an empty pipeline once again, meaning youll be stuck with yet more frantic hours of cold calls. This behavior pattern is common in sales and leads to the familiar “feast or famine” cycle, in which you either have tons of sales or no sales. A better approach, once youve started to book appointments, is to shift some of your focus to other activities but to continue to devote significant time to cold calling. This can mean either spending one hour every day making calls, or perhaps dedicating one morning a week to cold leads. As long as you continue to reach out to new leads in your territory, your pipeline will keep flowing with sales. Keep Organized The toughest part of breaking into a new territory, especially a big one, is not getting overwhelmed. Keeping organized will help you to stay on top of the action and will also help you to track your progress. Set up a “territory plan” laying out which part of your new territory youll tackle each week and keep your CRM up to date with your progress. Every lead that you collect and enter into your database is a future opportunity, even if you cant close that lead at the moment. A territory that spreads over a wide geographic area can cause you to waste a lot of time running from one appointment to another. The trick to minimizing transit time is scheduling appointments in the same area for the same day. If you set aside certain days each week for different parts of your territory, you can keep your driving around (or worse, flying around) to a minimum and have more time to pursue other sales activities. If you find yourself with an hour or two in between appointments, you can always knock on a few nearby doors and collect some more leads.

5 Career Tips from Arianna Huffington

5 Career Tips from Arianna Huffington 5 Career Tips from Arianna Huffington As founder of the popular site The  Huffington Post and now founder and CEO of Thrive Global, it’s no wonder that Arianna Huffington has become an inspiration to entrepreneurs around the world. And as many business leaders in the 21st century, Arianna has used her platforms to also advocate for health- the importance of sleep in particular. In a recent interview with Jess Barron of Livestrong, Arianna outlined several tips she deemed pertinent to achieving success: 1.  Be Unflappable She urges workers to “be in the eye of the hurricane” as much as they can and instead of growing a thick skin, to listen to what is around you.  There will always be criticism, but listening to criticism is valuable. If it’s criticism you can’t learn from, then stay on your course so you can achieve what you’ve got in mind. 2.  Put Your Own Oxygen Mask on First Focus on not always putting those around you first, because then you can get left behind. Don’t run on empty, because it will diminish your ability to be successful. If you are taken care of, then you will have more energy to give to the things that matter (work, family, friends, etc.).   3.  Unplug When You’re on Vacation Don’t stay up with work while on vacation. Write a good out-of-office email, indicating who to contact if the email is an emergency. By knowing that all of the urgent emails are taken care of, it helps you relax and recharge. Being always “on” is not going to help anyone, especially you. 4.  Take Care of Yourself For Arianna, getting a full night’s sleep and exercising enables her to be more creative in her workday. By prioritizing your wellbeing, you’re going to place the best bets on yourself. She quotes Rumi as an inspiration to “live life as if everything is rigged in your favor” because if you have a positive outlook on circumstances, then it’s most likely that good things are always around the corner. 5.  Make Time to Read In addition to having written 15 books herself, Arianna advises reading to keep your brain active and constantly learning. She’s currently reading “Meditations” by Marcus Aurelius, which focuses on weathering storms and still remaining steadfast in who you are, her advice is to pick up works that will inspire and motivate you.   Watch the full interview below!

There is a support group for Pumpkin Spice Latte lovers

There is a support group for Pumpkin Spice Latte lovers There is a support group for Pumpkin Spice Latte lovers It is almost mid-August, so in the retail world, it is basically late October. The school supplies are haunting children, the flannels are out and, of course, we are just a few weeks away from the infamous Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte entering our lives once again. You may have thought it was just a drink (and does anyone actually drink it? I’ve never seen it happen) but for some people, it is an absolute obsession. This is why Starbucks launched a closed Facebook group, called the  Leaf Rakers Society, to support those that find it hard to get through the months when the PSL is not featured on the menu. The group’s description reads:“This is a safe place for a) pumpkins b) year-round scarf-wearers c) those who would rather work on their Halloween costume than their tan d) members of the Great Pumpkinwatch 2017 Facebook Group. This group serves as a forum where we constructively work together with Mother Nature to help autumn arrive earlier in the calendar year. Maybe we get rid of August, or something?”It’s almost PSL timeAccording to an official Starbucks document obtained by Business Insider, the PSL will be available on August 28. While you count down the minutes you can also get excited about all the other Starbucks PSL-themed products because honestly is it really even fall if everything doesn’t have this flavor? There will be  Pumpkin Spice Cookie Straws and Pumpkin Spice Flavored Ground Coffee K-Cup Pods, and returning items, Ready-to-Drink Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Pumpkin Spice Flavored Ground Coffee, Pumpkin Spice Caffe Latte K-Cup Pods, Iced Espresso Classics Pumpkin Spice, and Starbucks VIA Instant Pumpkin Spice Latte.Or you can complain about our culture’s weird obsession with this drink that has somehow beat out leaves and Halloween to represent all of fall.As John Oliver once said, “Just about anything that reminds us of autumn is a better flavor than pumpkin spice. I personally, for instance, would rather drink a cable-knit sweater spice latte, or a Major League Baseball spice latte, or a keen awareness of my own mortality spice latte, because that’s what foliage is.”You have to admit cable-knit sweater doesn’t sound too bad.

Make the Cover Letter Your Secret Weapon

Make the Cover Letter Your Secret Weapon Make the Cover Letter Your Secret Weapon Make the Cover Letter Your Secret Weapon Today's post is written by Kerry Sandberg Scott (pictured), author of the blog Clue Wagon and a human resources professional with 14 years' experience. Kerry began her career in recruiting before serving as the head of HR for different companies. She has also advised several companies and recruiters on finding and hiring the best candidates. How do I stand out among all those other candidates for the job? It's a question I hear a lot lately. With an average of six candidates for every job opening in the United States, it's hard to know how to get employers to notice you. Everyone is looking for that special trick or magic codeword. The funny thing is that special trick or secret weapon is right under your nose: It's your cover letter. Here are the reasons why: 1.It shows that you put some effort into getting the job. When I receive 500 applications from a single ad, I need some way to make that stack more manageable. One way I do that is to eliminate those who didn't bother to include a cover letter. I've never understood why, but I always have a sizeable percentage of candidates who don't include a cover letter, even for high-level positions. This must be because there are some recruiters out there who tell people they don't read them. That may be true (sadly), but you don't have any way of knowing whether the person receiving your resume and cover letter is one of them. Even recruiters who don't read them won't penalize you for including one but lots of hiring folks will penalize you if you don't. So, make sure you survive that first cut. 2.It shows you're literate. I've never, ever hired for a job where being able to form a sentence wasn't a good thing. In my last job, for example, we hired baggage handlers. You wouldn't immediately think of that as a writing job, but they have to leave notes, write up incident reports, document procedures, and more. Everyone in an office uses email, and we've all received emails from people whose writing skills were so poor we couldn't figure out what they were saying. You don't need to be Shakespeare, but you'll stand out if you can show me you can write clearly and concisely. That's a skill you need for every job. 3.It shows me who you are. A lot of people have help writing their resumes. That means when I see a resume that looks great, it may or may not reflect on the candidate. Cover letters are typically written at the time of application, though, so the candidates usually write them without professional help. When you write it, I get a much better picture of who you are, without the filter of your super-polished resume. 4.It gives you a chance to explain. Many people have special circumstances that require explanation. Maybe you've been laid off from your last three jobs, or you spent only six months in your last gig, or you live out of state but are planning to move here next month. The cover letter gives you an opportunity to address potential concerns before they torpedo your chances for an interview. 5.It allows you to express yourself. When I applied for my last job as head of HR for a small airline, the competition was fierce, and my cover letter was one of the reasons I got an interview. In the letter, I told them why I wanted to work there. I explained how my aunt had been a flight attendant for 40+ years, and I had grown up playing flight attendant (well, okay, stewardess it was the '70s). I always dreamed of working for an airline, so the fact that they knew this was my dream job was part of the reason I was interviewed, then hired. If you have a reason for wanting the job beyond I need money, use your cover letter to tell them. I would rather hire someone who really wants to work for my company than someone who's just looking for another paycheck. A good cover letter can make all the difference in helping you stand out in a sea of candidates. Don't skip or skimp on this very important step!
